The Problem
The elderly begin to lose their identities when living away from family, friends, hobbies, and who they used to be.
They don’t feel like themselves and they grow depressed, anxious, and defensive.
These people begin to close off and quit relating to others.
The Vision
We know from research that music processing takes place in a part of the brain that is last to deteriorate and that people benefit greatly from music exposure throughout their lives, especially those experiencing memory loss.
If care facilities, families, and residents had the power to do everything they wanted, they would treat all of the problems and make it so the residents could return home.
While this may be impossible, I’m sure our collective goal is to come as close to this as possible.
The Seguine Music Foundation is a uniquely designed local not-for-profit organization that offers a research-based, turn-key, intensive creative aging program designed with individualized treatments proven to decrease agitation, depression, and anxiety levels while improving sleep habits, social skills, cognition, and communication abilities.
Current
Treatments
The most common method of treating the elderly today is medication. These medications often introduce negative side effects and cause problems clients didn’t already have. Also, many medications are PRN and are used when a resident gets upset, anxious, depressed, in pain, or are unable to sleep.
Residents of long term care facilities feel powerless in their own medical care. Caregivers feel guilt over giving medications that essentially change and control the individual. Families feel like they are losing the person they know and love to someone else that is shaped by the very medications that are being used to treat their symptoms.
The current system is unsatisfactory to all. Medications are effective, they do help, and are indeed a real necessity; however, many symptoms of old age and of medications can be treated with a simple, humane, and enjoyable method.
Our unique music-based creative aging program measurably increases social experience, reduces agitation, decreases depression and anxiety, increases sleep, decreases aggressive behaviors, improves speech, improves comprehension, and improves overall quality of life.

The Seguine Music Foundation is a turn-key creative aging solution. We have all of the equipment. We have the staff to obtain residents musical preferences, and we have a database to access it. Each individual is interviewed to rediscover their unique soundtrack that gives them a personal positive identity. We set up and maintain music listening devices. We help residents use real instruments and accompany them in jam sessions which we hold weekly for the entire facility.
Lastly, we monitor psychosocial progress by regularly giving depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction assessments.
Music immersion easily pays for itself in benefits requiring fewer medical interventions, and appealing to potential residents and their families.
